Huawei Mediapad T1 7" Tablet Review

After a thorough search for the affordable yet decent tablet that will suit my needs, I decided to buy the Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 3G 8 GB tablet or should I say a phablet (combination of phone & tablet).

Some information about the Huawei brand from Wikipedia:

Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. is a Chinese multinational networking and telecommunications equipment and services company headquartered in ShenzhenGuangdong.[4] It is the largest telecommunications equipment maker in the world, having overtaken Ericsson in 2012.[5]

Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 tablet was released, last March 2015 in China. In the Philippines, it was released just recently, June 2015, so it is still fresh.

I tried to find reviews about this tablet before buying but to my dismay I can't find any reviews aside from the one and only Russian review on YouTube, to which I couldn't even understand. Another video on YouTube was a promotional video of the said tablet, but in Japanese. Nevertheless, I bought it anyway.

I ordered the tablet from Lazada Philippines on Father's Day to avail of their 500 pesos off promo voucher. It costs P4,990 with free Globe microsim. I got a voucher worth P500 (from the Father's Day holiday discount) so I only paid P4,490 with one year warranty from Villman Philippines, the tablet distributor.

Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 Tablet scores 18,229. Not bad :)

BATTERY TEST

Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 has 4100mAh, higher than any well known brands tablet with same price as this tablet.

I can't find any information upon the initial charging of the battery in the manual so I just observed how many hours until it was fully charged.
Upon the time of the delivery, the tablet has still 50% battery so I used it until the battery has only 5% left and charge it.
It was approximately 5 hours until it was fully charged.
I observed the battery's life with Wi-fi on, some video playing, browsing the net, some music, some games like Temple Run and Car Racing.

Here's some screenshots:

(5% battery left, last for 1 day, 3 hours & 40minutes)

(Screen time on 8 hours 40 minutes)

(Wi-fi 8 hours 56 mins on)

Nice! I love the battery! If you're not a constant gamer then this tablet is highly recommended :) The battery lasts a day, yaaayyy! :)

PROS
* What I really love about this tablet is the battery. It would last a day if you continuously use it, but would last more than a day when you don't much use it.
* It has ultra power saving mode that you can switch to if you don't use much your tablet, thus saves your battery for a longer time.
* The screen is also good, smooth to touch and easily responsive even if you have screen protector on it.
* It's a 3g tablet. It has microsim you can use for messaging and calling and for connecting to your mobile data as an alternative when you don't have a Wi-Fi device. It has the functionality of a phone with its call and text features.
* It Supports USB OTG.
* It has good speaker and is loud enough. Pretty good as compared to other brands. The speaker is located on the front screen.
* It's more affordable as compared to other well known brands but can compete with its specs.
* It's slim and lightweight as compared to other brands
* It's good for watching videos and playing music, surfing the net, accessing Social Media, You Tube.
* It has cool user interface and have pre-themes installed powered by its Emotion 3.0 UI
* Video calling on Skype is pretty good, even at night the video interface is clear, considering your lighting is good.
 * One more thing, you can change the font of the system and no need to be rooted. Just download some apps like iFont in the Playstore.

CONS
* The only slight but tolerable disadvantage I see is the internal storage. The specs indicated an 8GB internal storage but the system already made use of half of the internal storage. So you have left with only 4GB for your apps and storage. You have to buy a microsd card for your storage expansion.
* Same also with the 1 GB RAM, half of it was already being used by the system before you have installed new apps. But it never lags anyway when you open several apps at a time or do multitasking so I guess it's not a problem. I haven't tried it though with games like Clash of Clans or other big games.
* The camera which are both 2MP only is not good with taking pics and videos on a not well lit background. Considering it is only 2MP that is acceptable. But in a well lit surroundings or background, It's pretty decent. Well, considering it's just 2MP don't expect too much about the camera.
* What else? I guess the back case is prone to scratches so you better need a tablet case for that. Also,be careful with the microsim/microSD slot cover when you open it. I feel like it will come off easily if I accidentally  forced it to open.
* And another thing, since this tablet is newly released I can't seem to find a screen protector and tablet case on a Huawei brand. I found some generic screen protector and case in some shops.

My verdict: 4.5 out of 5 stars

I totally love it! It's affordable yet very good as compared to costly brands and some local brands. Hope this would last me for a long time. It is really a bang on your buck.
If you are looking for an alternative tablet/phablet aside from other higher price brands this is the one you should consider buying.

*Note: I don't know if this is upgradeable to Android 5.0 Lollipop as this is my first Huawei Device and I'm not really a techie person. I did some research on the net but can't find any. Maybe because this tablet was just recently released. I never tried rooting it either.

....................

UPDATE: After almost a year, my tablet broke.
It doesn't have a problem but lately my niece who borrowed it all the time and used for watching movies dropped it twice accidentally. After that incident, the only thing i encounter one time was the screen went black while she's watching movies but managed to solved the problem by soft resetting.
But just last month i finally said goodbye to my tablet.
I put it inside my bag as i left the house. I remember it still has 65% battery. When i got home, i saw the tablet is off. I'm wondering what happened coz i didn't use it. It's just in my bag all the time i'm roaming at the mall. I switched it on but it won't on. Tried soft reset but also not working. So i went to charged it thinking battery might got drained. I left it charging and when i came back after few hours the tablet still has that red light led. I tried switching on but still not working.
I searched on the net the possible solutions but no one has. They said better to bring it to repair shops. I have a feeling the board has been damaged an instead of going on a hassle for repairing (Maybe sooner i'll bring it to a repair shop) i decided to find an alternative tablet as a replacement with my damaged one.
I don't really want to buy a tablet again but want instead to upgrade my 2 yrs old phone but when i saw a tablet with good specs i decided to buy it. It was on 50% off sale so i decided to get one. It's the Lenovo Phab which i got for P4,990 instead of P9,990. They also have sale for Lenovo Phab Plus for P6,990 but since I'm on a tight budget i chose the cheaper one. I'll be doing a review soon.

  2. Hi. I got my Mediapad t1 7.0 a week ago and I noticed that the screen is not that responsive. Most of the time, I have to tap the icons twice before they open. I have problems with typing on its keyboard too. I have an LG G Pad and its way smoother and more responsive than my mediapad. Do you have any suggestion on how to solve this problem?

Another question is , Do u use powerbank to charge your mediapad? Is it ok to use a powerbank with 2.1A output? The charger included has 1A only.

Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks!

  3. Hi there! Sorry for the very late response.

I haven't experienced that with my mediapad T1 tablet :) everything is a smooth touch.
May I know if you have put a screen protector on? It will make the touch response better than without a screen protector.

Regarding the use of power bank, I have an original romoss solo 5 power bank which I used during the typhoon to charge the tablet. It's a disaster :( the back portion of the tablet seems bloated. But it is still working.
I would suggest that you have to be careful using powerbanks.

  4. Romoss solo 5 has dual output, right? Did you use the 1A output or the 2A in charging your mediapad?

    1. Camera is just average (low quality of pics) considering it's only 2MP
( front & back cam ) but decent enough for video calls

  6. Hi! You mentioned back of the phone seems bloated, how is it now? I'm asking because I'm thinking of buying one for my son but I also had a phone before with 4500mAh battery and had been issue. Replaced the battery twice and the 3rd time, I didn,t bother getting it fix anymore. Hope I hear back from you soon and thanks in advance.

    1. It's still working :) ( di naman sya ganun kabloated, medyo tumaba lang ng konti),in fact I'm using it everyday. Just be careful with using powerbanks and do not abuse the tablet. Charge it properly and it will be good for a long run. It's been with me for almost 5 months already.

  7. I've bought a white one last Saturday at a mall in Davao City. It's my advance Christmas gift for my mom in the province. So far I'm loving it. Bought mine with a free Huawei case na rin, and the 8GB microSD card was sold at a discounted price. At P4,990.00 and considering the specs plus huge battery, I believe its SULIT!

  15. Hi, can someone tell me if this phablet comes with a built in FM Radio? ... thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hi, thanks for the answer about the FM Radio ... I have a few more questions:
    1. Does this phablet have a built in equalizer for the MP3 player?
    2. How do you like it so far after using it for 6 months, is it still good?
    3. ebay has this phablet for $70 right now, do you feel that's a good buy for it? ... thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hello there :)
    1. No built in equalizer. You can download several music equalizer in the PlayStore :)
    2. Yes, it's still good. In fact, I'm using it everyday per my needs :)
    3. I suggest you buy according to your needs. What are your needs in a tablet? I bought it because I want something that will last even if I surf the net for a whole day and I'm satisfied with it. The battery is good. Don't expect too much about the cameras because they just sporting 2mp both the front and back. The speaker is good for playing music, it's loud enough. Well, this is very cheap in price compared to other brands with almost same specs.

  20. I have recently purchase MediaPad T1 7'' 3G supported.I am having a problem with its software.Whenever,I use youtube and google chrome, the software behaves erroneously as if it is under effect of some virus.Unwanted options are automatically clicked in sequence and new videos and email options automatically open up that I did not even click on.The option which I clicked on immediately closes and haphazard options are clicked as some virus is active. This happens usually for web based applications and seems like user loses control of software

    2. I have installed Huawei's PC Suite Software named HiSuite both on Tablet and on PC,and have updated a few software on Tablet like web browsers, pdf readers etc.It is also giving the ROM Flashing feature that I have not yet tried as it would replace the factory installed OS Version.I think using ROM flashing may solve this issue but I need to do a lot of research on this matter before employing that option as some people hold the opinion that this technique could damage the device for good.I would let you know about it after thoroughly exploring this option...

  21. Just bought this Huawei mediapad T1 7.0, 3 days ago for my son who likes to play games. I was worried for his eyesight considering the small screen of his samsung phone. I got a good deal from a dealer in SM for 4,990 (w/ bundled globe sim) i also got a huawei case, 4GB memory card and power bank.

It looks quite decent for the price and does not give off that cheap and plasticky feel i see in some tablets within 5k price range.

    Pros :
    *Long battery life
    *Good build quality
*Screen resolution quality is very good and bright
even at low light setting (for games and youtube vids)
*Its quite sturdy but light weight and not thick (even with the case on)
*Good speaker and its loud (but don't expect anything else)

    Cons :
*8gb internal memory (16gb might have been better) Kitkat and preloaded apps take up about 4gb, leaving you only about half of available memory.
*67% screen to body ratio, you have a sizeable useless real estate around the screen
*basic UI (just like a samsung)
*touch screen is not as responsive, sometimes you have to tap 2x or more.

All in all, its WELL MADE with an aluminum unibody (for 4,990), again you dont get that "plasticky" feel. More importantly the battery can go all day and into the night even with heavy use in games, wifi and net surfing. Perfect for an 11yr. old. Its not heavy and bulky, you can hold it with 1 hand for a length of time and your wrist wont complain. Power, volume rocker, mini USB, 3.5mm port and also access to sim card and memory slots are all located in their proper places with a captured cover for sim card and memory card slots (to me this minor detail is important). Even with only a 1.2ghz quad core processor and 1gb RAM, its still quite snappy. Downloads and uploads are fast enough, games needing internet connection can be played without hang-ups and disconnections (and i know fast internet, our office has a 5.5mbps DSL unli internet service). Although nowadays with mobile devices what matters most is the type of internet connection that one has. You can have the ferrari of smartphones and tablets and it wont matter squat with passes off as mobile internet service in the Philippines.

If you are the techie type who wants a few more bells and whistles with your tablet, then this Huawei is not for you, go buy something else. This tablet is for the kid who can drain his old smartphone in 2 hours playing CofC or watching nerf battle videos on youtube. For its price of 4,990 or lower the Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 can perform admirable yeoman work and that's about it. This tablet will definitely make you work harder so you can break out of the 5K price range. If you do buy this, try to get a deal on a memory card with 8gb or higher and set your default memory to SD card. Fortunately i had a spare 8gb memory card which immediately replaced the free 4gb card.

  22. I bought mine used from a friend. (Mediapad T1-701u 16GB version) purchased from MemoExpress. All I can say is, AMAZING. Huawei has not ever failed me in terms of signal reception and network compatibility.

I have two Huawei devices to date (Huawei Y5C as a backup phone) and all of it are working 100% well.

  24. thank you for this review, been looking around the internet.

i'll probably use this tablet for work (web browsing, e-book reading, word processor). i also need it to have good internet connection using mobile data only. i'll be going to places with no internet or wifi and will also probably have low mobile signal on globe... but decent on smart.

what's your experience on using mobile data? and, sorry for my ignorance, but is smart micro sim card the same with the common sim card we use here in PH?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. mobile data is okay. The speed of your internet of course still depends on your preferred network provider. Smart micro sim is smaller than the standard sim (which was the size of the sim we used back in the old days). Anyway when u buy a smart sim it's already precut into three sizes. The standard cut, the micro sim cut, and the smallest cut which is the nano sim.
